A Short Walk from the Seafront to the Promenade

Starting from Your Seaside Bed and Breakfast

Hornsea is a traditional East Yorkshire seaside town, and many of its bed and breakfasts sit just a few minutes' walk from the seafront. That makes the level route from the seafront to the promenade one of the simplest and most rewarding ways to spend a gentle afternoon. There are no hills to climb, no steep steps to negotiate, and no need to consult a map. Leave your car at the B&B, pull on a comfortable pair of shoes, and set out on foot. The walk follows the sea wall for much of its length, so the sea is your constant companion.

Following the Sea Wall

The sea wall provides a sturdy, flat path that runs alongside the beach. You will hear the waves rolling in and feel the breeze on your face. The surface is tarmac or concrete, easy underfoot and well maintained by the local council. Along the way, you will find benches placed at regular intervals. These are perfect for sitting and watching the world go by – dog walkers, families with buckets and spades, and the occasional brave swimmer. The walk is short, perhaps half a mile from the southern end of the seafront to the main promenade, but you can stretch it by continuing along the promenade itself. Allow an hour for a leisurely there-and-back stroll, including stops.

Benches, Ice Cream and Little Pleasures

The route is dotted with small delights that make a gentle outing feel special. Keep an eye out for these along the way:

  • Benches: Many face the sea directly, and some are sheltered by low walls. They are ideal for a rest, a chat, or simply closing your eyes and listening to the gulls.
  • Ice cream kiosks: Look out for the seasonal kiosks selling cones, tubs and lollies. A 99 Flake is almost obligatory on a sunny afternoon. Most open from Easter through to October, though some stay open at weekends for longer.
  • Viewpoints: Certain spots along the sea wall offer clear views of the coastline. On a clear day, you can see the cliffs at Flamborough Head to the north and the sweep of the bay towards Bridlington.
  • Boating lake: Near the promenade, a small boating lake adds a touch of charm. It is a lovely place to pause and watch model boats or feed the ducks.

Bring a little cash, as not all kiosks take cards. The benches are free, of course, and there is no charge for the view.

A Route for Every Pace

Because the path is level and well maintained, it suits wheelchairs, pushchairs and anyone who prefers an easy stroll. You can walk as far as you like and turn back whenever you wish. The total distance from the seafront to the promenade is about three-quarters of a mile. Dogs are welcome on the sea wall path, but do check local signs for beach restrictions during the summer months. The route is also popular with cyclists, so keep an ear out for bells. If you are staying at a bed and breakfast in Hornsea, this walk is the perfect way to work up an appetite before dinner or to walk off a full English breakfast.

Making an Afternoon of It

Pair your walk with a visit to the beach. The sand is clean and gently sloping, and the water is shallow for a good distance out. After your stroll, return to your bed and breakfast for a cup of tea or a slice of homemade cake. Many B&Bs in Hornsea offer just that kind of welcome. If you have energy left, the promenade leads towards the town centre, where you will find independent shops and cafes. But the real pleasure is the simple rhythm of sea, sky and a flat path underfoot. There is no need to rush. This is an afternoon for ambling, not for ticking off miles.

Practical Tips for a Gentle Outing

A few things to keep in mind will make your walk even more enjoyable. Check the tide times if you plan to go onto the beach – the sea comes in quickly along this stretch of coast. Wear comfortable shoes even though the path is flat; you might want to walk on the sand, which shifts underfoot. Bring a light jacket because the sea breeze can be cool even on warm days. Afternoon is ideal – the light is softer, the kiosks are open, and the benches are less likely to be full. Respect the sea wall and do not climb on the railings. Finally, take your time. Stop when you want to, sit when you want to, and let the gentle pace of Hornsea set the rhythm of your day.
